Q.Why one should not use a bowling Machine..?

There are a few very important complaints about Bowling Machines.

1) Senior players and  expert coaches are against extensive practice with Bowling Machines.

Any good Bowling Machine available in the market can spin and swing the ball both the ways.

All these Bowling Machines are useful if a batsman wants to practice any one type of delivery. There are no quick line / length change and  quick swing/ spin change features available with these Bowling Machines.(Although some Bowling Machines claim to have vernier adjustments to change the line and length of the ball, it is difficult to maneuver the adjustments as it will take a lot of time to do so. While playing with these machines a batsman can guess the type of delivery he is going to face).

Bowling Machines are forcing the batsman to play the same/similar ball repeatedly without any challenge. This kind of practice might be useful in the intial stages to correct the weaknesses of a batsman, but this becomes routine and predictable over a period of time.

These machines are conditioning the mindset of the batsman, where the batsman tends to expect the same or similar delivery again and again. That psychological rhythm will be carried to the real match, where no bowler bowls same deliveries at him. This is a big cause of worry to the Coach and the experienced batsmen.

2) Bowling machine cannot simulate all types of deliveries a human bowler can bowl?

A Bowling Machine may simulate the swing, speed or swing of any bowler, but it cannot change the trajectories.

For example…  an in-swinging delivery at a speed of 140 kmph bowled by Shoaib Akthar  is different from the in-swinging delivery of the same speed bowled by Ishanth Sharma or Brett Lee or any other bowler. No two bowlers can bowl exactly the same ball.

This is because of their height and style of bowling. Their ball delivering trajectories differs from one another.

All the Bowling Machines are fixed to a stand. Thus the trajectory produced for spin and swing or for any ball simulated by the Bowling Machine is the same.

So, one can say that the Bowling Machine cannot simulate all types of deliveries.

3) Bowling Machine does not have “Human Touch”?

Once Rahul Dravid said…“A batsman cannot read the body language of a Bowling Machine, as he usually does while a bowler is approaching to bowl at him. It’s a kind of a sixth sense or instinct, which tells the batsman, which type of ball the bowler is going to bowl”.

So, that says it all…a Bowling Machine can never be a substitute to the human bowlers.
